We had a little problem with the book, but I would use the company again, because of the excellent way they handled it.
Skillfully crafted lesbian love story
Love this novel of interracial lesbian love. It's still a classic!
I found the book to have a well developed plot. I kept wanting to know what would happen next. I would like to see a sequel that continues to develop the characters. Offhand I probably would not have bought the book. But I was able to get free, so I did;
I wish there was more to read by this author as I enjoyed this novel tremendously. The realistic prose is perfect for the story and one paragraph flowed into another. I didn't want the story to end. I'd like to call this a romance because it is romantic but it is so much more.
The main character, Renay, is so strong when it is so easy to be weak, she has my total admiration. She finds a chance at changing her life for the better and grabs at it. The characters are truly likable and human. They make mistakes and feel pain. They find happiness and you feel their joy. I loved watching the relationship between Renay who is black and Terry who is white develop, grow and change.
Just like any relationship the reader could not predict how they would develop. The dialogue is wonderfully written and left me racing from page to page. It didn't put it down until I finished it.
I would love to have more books exploring the dynamics of a mixed couple romance.
Don't miss this book!
I love everything about this book! I was so torn in the need to keep reading and not wanting anything bad to happen! Bad things did happen, but oh there were so many good things too! Ms Shockley's writing flowed so smoothly. She was able to capture so much in the emotions of the characters. I highly recommend this book, you are continually on the edge of your seat! Great read!
Amazing. As important today as when it first came out in 1974. What makes this a historical read is that it was the first book with an African American lesbian protagonist, what keeps it interesting today is the fact it's nothing short of incredible. Shockley's prose pulls you in, you feel like you're living in the pages of the novel - every smell, sight, taste, and sound is real. It's an incredible love story, a story of self discovery and finding true love for the first time. It'll take you on a journey of emotions, from love and laughing along with the characters, to feeling your heart jump into your throat with worry, to heart wrenching tears, and back to love again. I was devastated when the book ended, wishing I could spend more time watching their lives.
Alycee Lane's forward in this book should have been its afterward. In doing an academic critique of various elements of the book from the perspective of black/white history in the 60's and 70's, she describes the entire plot of the book. This is a novel and I don't choose to know the entirety of what a book's about at its beginning. And speaking as one who had been in a heterosexual marriage for 15 years before falling in love with a woman, an issue that was never dealt with in the book was the protagonist's grappling with her own changed identity from heterosexual to homosexual. This has been a major issue for most women in this situation, as I understand it. Characters are well drawn and the plot does move readers rapidly through it. A great first effort for this author.
